Museum of Bags Amsterdam is thinking “out of the bag” with a new course
With the arrival of Manon Schaap, it was announced that the museum would literally start thinking “out of the bag” and “out of the box” and welcomed other disciplines and items in the former home.
Museum of Bags Amsterdam (former Museum of Bags and Purses Hendrikje) is taking a new course thanks to the arrival of new museum director Manon Schaap.
Anyone who fears that bags will be subordinate in the museum will soon be reassured by Schaap. “The collection that we have offers so many opportunities to do more with it.”
“We are going to communicate more instead of collecting,” says Schaap while the new exhibition “Talent Invasion” is being built in the space for her. “The collection provides tools for stories that we can tell.” That’s what Schaap calls the “trunk show” that is on the program with travel cases where the museum really delves into the history of travel. The museum team is also working on an exhibition about “bags in movies”. The example of a Hitchcock film is mentioned, where the bag acquires its own character and role in a scene and refers to the woman with an “evocative form”. “We go for more depth”.
In the conversation with Schaap, it appears that the manner of speaking around the bag does not end. Schaap has been fully trained in the language of the museum where she has been at the head since March 2019. “We also see the depth as a transfer of knowledge. We want to give people luggage. Instead of thinking “Oh my mother had that bag too,” they are talking about the subject the exhibition is about. “In this way, the museum focuses more on the social conversations that are going on. “We are going to participate more in society,” says Schaap.
Museum of Bags Amsterdam welcomes 21 young talents with "Talent Invasion"
Part of the new course is literally opening the doors and windows to the world. For example, for the new exhibition, which opens to the public on Sunday 8 September, 21 young talents from various disciplines have been invited. Guest curator Martien Mellema is responsible for the selection and looked at fashion designers, but also art and design corner. All 21 talents, some of whom also participate in the Lichting show on the Amsterdam Fashion Week program on Friday, comment on the zeitgeist with their work and challenge the status quo. Schaap wants to make Talent Invasion a permanent part of the program at the Museum of Bags Amsterdam. There will also be more exhibitions than in the old program. First there was a long-term exhibition twice a year and now there will also be exhibitions in other rooms that will only last six weeks.
“There is more movement in the house. We really want to build a community, “says Schaap. If this succeeds with the 60,000 to 70,000 visitors that the museum attracts every year, then there is already a substantial community. Schaap emphasizes that growth in visitor numbers is not a goal in itself. She wants to involve the visitors in the museum. The bag becomes a vehicle for telling stories about and from society. “We are going from a museum to a house. Instead of the museum values, we now have the values of a house; hospitable, but also quirky. ”
