Plastic clutch

Plastic clutch with geometrical pattern, possibly French, ca. 1930
new materials

The sleek silhouette of the dresses worn in the 20s and 30s was also translated to the bag.

The clutch or envelope bag was born and it quickly became very popular. The flat rectangular bag without a handle was carried in the hand or under the arm. Some closed with a cut or zipper and others, such as this envelope bag, with a flap. The flap that covers the entire front of the envelope bag is decorated with geometric motifs in contrasting colors. This streamlined design gives a nod to the avant-garde art of artists such as Piet Mondriaan.

On display in the exhibition “It’s a Family Affair” until april 2020.
