Bags in Bloom

After the Second World War, the economy blossomed and Italy started to play a leading role in the supply of quality goods.

Italy also became a popular film location and the booming film industry led Hollywood stars to favour Italian fashion. This brought Italian fashion to the international public’s attention. In 1947 Gucci introduced a small handbag crafted in pigskin with a distinctive bamboo handle. After the Second World War there was a great shortage of materials, so craftsmen had to look for alternatives. From this the iconic bag with bamboo handle was born.
