Art Project

In 2002 Carolien Vlieger and Hein van Dam collaborated on a series of bags for an art project.

The pair had just settled in Rotterdam and wanted to provide a counterpoint to the narrative of street violence in the city that was being provided by the media at the time. The first ‘Guardian Angel’ bags were made of a combination of vintage bags and new materials, into which the image of a knife or pistol was embossed. Due to the positive response to these pieces, the bags were put into production, first in felt, as in this example, and later also in leather. The phrase ‘Guardian Angel’ has become their trademark.
