Engraved clutch

Engraved plastic clutch with metal frame and plastic clasp, United States, ca. 1935
New Materials
United States

The American art deco was characterized by an abstract aesthetic for which new materials such as chrome and plastics with their glossy qualities lend themselves well.

The fashionable clutch had a smooth and simple appearance. The smooth lines with which both the front and back of this clutch are decorated refer to the exciting, fast pace of modern life of the 1930s. Women enjoyed their newly acquired freedoms in fashionable night clubs. Dressed in satin evening dresses with a clutch in hand, they drank, smoked and danced until the early hours.

On display in the exhibition “It’s a Family Affair” until april 2020.
