Clutch with metal frame

Engraved plastic clutch with metal frame and wooden clasp, United States, ca. 1935
New materials

Many types of plastics were developed in the early twentieth century.

These plastics were not only used in the war industry, but for the production of all kinds of utensils, including fashion accessories. These brand new materials were considered the height of glamour. The affordability of plastics also contributed to the popularity. Certainly in the 1930s after the Great Depression, people had little to spend. Bags made of plastics were a way for women to show themselves fashionably at a party.

On display in the exhibition “It’s a Family Affair” until april 2020.
